Furtw?ngler is widely regarded as one of the greatest conductors of the 20th century.
He started as titular conductor of Berliner Philharmoniker at the age of 26 from 1922 to 1945, and a second period after second world war since 1952 until he died in 1954.
Also was Kapellmeister of Gewandhausorchester Leipzig from 1922 to 1928 and titular conductor of Wiener Philharmoniker from 1927 to 1930.
He died only three months after his legendary Beethoven performance at the Lucerne Festival on 22 August 1954 (Symphony No. 9 In D, Op. 125).
