In March 1951, Sam Phillips (2) recorded several songs by Ike Turner's band in Memphis.
Rocket "88", on which Jackie Brenston sang lead & was credited with writing, was given to Chicagos' Chess Records for release. The song, released by Chess as by Jackie Brenston and His Delta Cats, was a #1 R&B hit for over a month & has been referred to as the "first" Rock & Roll song by many. After one further recording session, Brenston and Turner parted company.
